BBC NEWS | World | Europe | Gunman kills Dutch film director

Theo van Gogh was killed today, close to where I live. [And just around the corner of where I first lived in Amsterdam].
He was stabbed and shot to death by a Dutch-Moroccan outside the Stadsdeel office next to the Oosterpark. He had just dropped off one of his children in the day-care centre they have there.
It is quite shocking that this can happen in Amsterdam. And in a neighbourhood that is not that violent.
He has been outspoken about spousal abuse in orthodox Islamic families and had received death threats. He unfortunately did not take them seriously.
Although living in my old neighbourhood, and about 3 stops away on the no 9 tram, I never saw him in the flesh. But as a columnist in one of the free papers that I read every morning I was very aware of him.
