I have been watching this story develop for a while now.
I am very interested in this change in the japanese royal family.
What needs to be remembered is that the succession of the royal family was only made patriarchial after WWII.
Previously the emperor could chose his successor, as he had a divine right to do so, but would usually choose his oldest son.
But the thing that shocked me in this story is the following excerpt
… suggesting instead the crown prince use concubines to produce a male heir
Isn’t this like returning to the feudal system that was overthrown in the 19th century?
I guess some people are just not connected with the common japanese person who WANTS females to ascend to the thrown.
