Boing Boing won Best Group Blog? eh?

Boing Boing: Holy crap! Thanks for the awards, Bloggies voters!

I would like to start by congratulating them on the award.
But Boing Boing is NOT a blog!
At least not in my opinion.
They are a news site.

Now wikipedia defines a blog as;

A blog entry typically consists of the following:

* Title – main title, or headline, of the post.
* Body – main content of the post. Blogs use a conversational style of documentation.
* Permalink – the URL of the full, individual article.
* Post Date – date and time the post was published.

A blog entry optionally includes the following:

* Comments – comments added by readers
* Categories (or tags) – subjects that the entry discusses
* Trackback – links to other sites that refer to the entry

I strongly disagree with this definition.

One of the most important points of blogging is the social interaction between the authors and the readers, or COMMENTS.
It is what differentiates blogging from the simple content management systems that came before blogging.

My personal definition of a blog is as follows;

A blog entry must consist of the following:

* Title – main title, or headline, of the post.
* Body – main content of the post. Blogs use a conversational style of documentation.
* Post Date – date and time the post was published.
* Comments – comments added by readers
* Permalink – the URL of the full, individual article.

A blog entry optionally includes the following:

* Categories (or tags) – subjects that the entry discusses
* Trackback – links to other sites that refer to the entry

Slashdot, for instance, is a fantastic blog. It may predate blogging but it fits all of my criteria.

Of course someone might say that my definition also includes forums.

But the idea of forums is very different. Everyone can start a new thread, and that every post has equal importance.
Blogging made the original thread post into an article.
All replies are just comments on the article.
And who can post the original post is restricted.

I yet again congratulate Boing Boing, they are one of the best news sites on the web. Even better than the BBC.

just not a blog
